Biography

Bruce Vrana is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He teaches the senior design project course, CBE 4590, and has been involved in advising senior design groups and writing problem statements since 1993. With over 41 years of experience in the chemical industry, he has worked for DuPont in various roles focused on research and development, manufacturing, and corporate engineering. His majority career has been as an internal engineering consultant within DuPont, where he contributed to the development of projects related to nylon intermediates, biomaterials, and biofuels. Vrana has significant expertise in techno-economic evaluations and process synthesis in chemical process design, assisting research teams in commercializing new products and enhancing existing processes. He has taught DuPont’s internal course on Economic Evaluations to 2000 employees globally over his 30-year career. Currently, he leads IFF’s corporate Process Modeling Network and focuses on developing and commercializing engineered polysaccharides as part of the Designed Enzymatic Biomaterials technology platform, which utilizes renewable resources to create sustainable polymers for a wide variety of applications.
