Dr. Bruno Carvalho

Biography

Bruno Carvalho specializes in urban life and the changes within cities. He is the author of 'Invention of the Future: A History of Cities in the Modern World' published by Princeton University Press. This book explores the period from the 1750s when city dwellers and planners began to envision the future in radically different ways compared to the past. It recasts the history of modern urbanization through competing visions and the dramatic technological, intellectual, and cultural transformations that shaped it. Carvalho argues that understanding the futures of the past is crucial to comprehend the history of built environments in an increasingly urban world. He has published numerous articles and essays, employing interdisciplinary approaches that bridge history, literary analysis, urban design, landscape architecture, and the social sciences with a keen interest in cities. He is recognized for his award-winning book 'Porous City: Cultural History of Rio de Janeiro.' Carvalho has co-organized several critical editions and is actively involved in various academic committees and initiatives related to urban studies and design.
