Biography

Bruno Carvalho specializes in urban life and the dynamics of change in cities. He is the author of 'Invention of the Future: History of Cities in the Modern World,' which examines how urban planners and city dwellers from the 1750s onwards began to think about the future in radically new ways. His book recasts the history of modern urbanization against a backdrop of competing visions and significant technological, intellectual, and cultural transformations. Carvalho argues that understanding the futures of the past can illuminate the history of built environments, particularly in an increasingly urbanized world. He has published numerous articles and essays, employing interdisciplinary approaches that bridge history, literary analysis, urban design, landscape architecture, and social sciences. He is known for his award-winning book 'Porous City: Cultural History of Rio de Janeiro' and has held various academic and editorial roles throughout his career, including serving on advisory committees and editorial boards.
