Dr. Bruno Simma

Biography

Bruno E. Simma is a leading professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School, where he has contributed significantly to the field of international law since joining in 1986. He previously served a nine-year term as a judge on the International Court of Justice, gaining a distinguished reputation in legal adjudication and international relations. Appointed in 2013 as a third-party judge/arbitrator for the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal based in The Hague, he has extended his influence across various legal institutions. Simma's academic contributions include a visiting professorship with the University of Munich's Faculty of Law from 1972 to 2003, alongside joint appointments and various professorships across European universities. He co-founded the European Journal of International Law and the European Society of International Law, further consolidating his role in the academic community. His work includes co-authoring 'Universelles Völkerrecht,' a pivotal textbook in international law, and he has lectured extensively at the Hague Academy of International Law. Over the years, he has also been involved with the UN Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights as well as the UN International Law Commission. Notably, his arbitration skills have been sought in high-profile international legal disputes, including those involving Costa Rica and disputes concerning water resources with Chile.
