Biography

Bryan McKinley Jones Brayboy (Lumbee) is the dean of Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy and the Carlos Montezuma Professor of Education and Social Policy. With a 25-year academic career, he has invested in people's higher education, focusing on how institutional resources affect educational access. Brayboy uses rigorous research methods and is known for applying a rich theoretical grounding infused with humor and humility. As a National Academy of Education member and an AERA Fellow, his research investigates the knowledge systems that influence Indigenous students’ educational experiences. Additionally, Brayboy has coauthored significant studies in anthropology and education, publishing over 100 scholarly works, including articles and edited volumes. His contributions have been recognized through several awards, including the George Louise Spindler Award from the American Anthropological Association. Brayboy earned his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, as well as a master's and a PhD (with distinction) from the University of Pennsylvania. He has held various prominent positions including visiting professor roles and has been a significant contributor to initiatives supporting Indigenous education.
