Biography

Bryan Gick is an academic co-director of the ELIE Research and co-lead of the Simulating Languaging Bodies project at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is a professor in the Department of Linguistics within the Faculty of Arts. His work has involved exploring the physical mechanisms of speech production and the perceptions of phonology and phonetics in both normal and disordered speech among children and various languages. Through collaborations, he has developed innovative techniques that apply ultrasound imaging technology to speech research, as well as protocols for studying haptic perception of speech and methods for observing low-level planning in speech motor behavior through biomechanical simulations.
