Biography

Bryan Webler joined the Carnegie Mellon University faculty in 2013 as a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Co-Director of the Center for Iron and Steelmaking Research. He has extensive experience in industry-supported steel research and has held a courtesy faculty appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2021. Bryan obtained his B.S. in Engineering Physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 2005 and both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2007 and 2008 respectively. Before joining academia, he worked as a Senior Engineer at the Bettis Atomic Laboratory from 2008 to 2013. His research interests focus on process metallurgy, including liquid steel refining, non-metallic inclusion characterization, continuous casting of steel, and additive manufacturing techniques like laser powder bed fusion. He has been recognized with the Kent D. Peaslee Junior Faculty Award by the Association for Iron and Steel Technology Foundation and serves actively as a Key Reader for the Metallurgical Materials Transactions B and as an associate editor for Metallurgical Research Technology. Bryan is also interested in the history of metallurgy, particularly within the steel industry in the Pittsburgh area.
