Biography

Emeritus Director and Distinguished Scientist at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Professor Bryan Williams has made significant contributions to the understanding of antiviral mechanisms and the actions of interferons, which has advanced therapeutic utility in cancer biology and innate immunity. He discovered the 2-5A-RNaseL pathway and the protein kinase R cloning, characterizing innate immune signaling pathways that have opened new therapeutic opportunities. Williams' academic journey began with a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Otago in New Zealand, followed by postdoctoral training at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. He has held faculty positions at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children. Before joining Monash University as Director in 2006, he served as the Chairman of the Department of Cancer Biology at the Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the USA. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Milstein Award from the International Society for Interferon Research and the Boltzmann Award for international research collaboration. Williams has been an influential figure in cytokine research and has served on several editorial boards, contributing significantly to the field. Currently, he is involved in various roles, including Chair of the Award Committee for the International Cytokine and Interferon Society.
