Biography

Bryan Yazell is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, specializing in the exploration of social dimensions of literature that relate to public debates on welfare, climate change, and migration. His book, 'American Vagrant Literature: Race, Work and Welfare' (Edinburgh), reconstructs the influence of Anglo-US sources on the subject of vagrancy, which was once a popular cultural sensation and a significant governmental issue at the turn of the century. He analyzes literary depictions of tramping and provides insights through sources like Mark Twain's travelogues and Jack London's ethnographic narratives. Recently, his research has also explored how literary fiction, particularly science fiction and 'climate fiction', contributes to our social imagination regarding climate change and related issues, including climate-induced migration. His collaborative projects aim to co-develop knowledge with readers, notably through a DFF-funded research project focused on using flash fiction to address climate anxiety in educational settings.
