Bryant Allen was born in New Zealand in 1944. He earned his BA degree from Massey University in 1965 and a Master's degree with first class honors in 1969, focusing on the development of the island Mangaia, Cook Islands. In 1970, he became a Tutor in the School of Social Sciences at Flinders University and, in 1971, entered a PhD scholarship in the Department of Human Geography at the Australian National University (ANU). His PhD research studied the adoption and diffusion of innovations in the Torricelli foothills of East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. In 1974, he became a Lecturer in Geography at the University of Papua New Guinea. Allen returned to ANU in 1982 as a Research Fellow in the Department of Human Geography, engaging in various projects, including the review of the Magarini Resettlement Project in Kenya. He collaborated closely with notable researchers on food and water shortages in Papua New Guinea. Returning to ANU, he retired in December 2009 from his position as Head of the Department of Human Geography, contributing notably to projects related to economic and sustainable development, land management, and environmental impacts.
