Biography

Bryn Owen is a molecular endocrinologist whose research focuses on nuclear hormone receptor (NR) signaling. His work employs model systems to understand the adaptive processes that maintain whole-body energy homeostasis and reproductive function during periods of fluctuating nutrient availability. His laboratory is investigating the cellular receptor estrogen (ER-alpha) in the hypothalamus, specifically how it controls the timing and progression of the ovulatory cycle. He has a particular interest in the control mechanisms that are lost during nutritional challenges such as anorexia and obesity. Dr. Owen is developing innovative transgenic and proteomic in vitro systems to address these questions. He is also interested in hypothalamic pathways that are responsible for the reward-value of nutrients and the thermogenic potential of brown adipose tissue (BAT), with a focus on targeting these pathways for anti-obesity therapies. Additionally, he leads the Teaching and Assessment for the BSc Endocrinology program and co-chairs the college-wide 3Rs advisory group, as well as being a member of the Department’s Athena SWAN committee.
