Professor Dr. Burcin Becerik Gerber

Biography

Burçin Becerik-Gerber is the Dean's Professor at the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at USC. With over 15 years of research, she focuses on advanced data acquisition, modeling, and visualization in the context of user-centered responsive adaptive built environments. She pioneered the field of Human-Building Interaction (HBI), which explores the dynamic interplay between human experiences and intelligent built environments. Becerik-Gerber has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and has secured roughly $14 million in research funding from diverse sources including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and corporate sponsors. Her accolades include being named one of MIT Technology Review's top 35 innovators under 35 in 2012, receiving the FIATECH Celebration Engineering Technology Innovation Award in 2018, and the Emmy Award for a documentary co-produced in 2022. Becerik-Gerber has also received multiple recognitions for her mentorship and leadership in academia, including the Mellon Mentoring Award and the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology, Engineering, and Science Fellowship. Currently, she serves as the Associate Editor for ASCE's Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering and has made significant contributions to the field of engineering through her leadership roles and innovative research.
