Biography

Burcu Akinci is the Hamerschlag University Professor and Dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, specializing in civil and environmental engineering. Akinci earned a B.S. in civil engineering from Middle East Technical University in 1991, followed by an M.B.A. from Bilkent University in 1993, and both an M.S. (1995) and Ph.D. (2000) in civil environmental engineering from Stanford University. Akinci's research interests are focused on the development of models and approaches to streamline the construction and management processes of facilities. This includes investigating the utilization and integration of building information models and data capture technologies such as 3D imaging and radio-frequency identification systems. With over 60 referred journal publications and 80 refereed conference papers, Akinci has also co-edited a book on CAD/GIS integration and embedded commissioning. Akinci has graduated more than 16 Ph.D. students and over 15 M.S. thesis students and continues to advise several Ph.D. students. As a recognized leader in her field, she has been honored as an ASCE Distinguished Member and Fellow, reflecting her significant contributions to civil engineering practices and education.
