Biography

C. Thomas Avedisian joined Cornell University in 1980 after receiving his doctorate. Prior to this, he was employed at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, N.J., where he worked on thermal design for electronic systems. He has served as a Guest Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology from 1988 to 2020, conducting research on spray combustion and microboiling processes. He was a Visiting Professor at Brown University during the 1994/95 academic year. Avedisian was honored as a Science Technology Policy Fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, where he assisted in program review and development of new energy technologies. He has received numerous recognitions for his research, including the James Harry Potter Gold Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 1999 and the Heat Transfer Memorial Award in 2006 for significant contributions in the field of heat transfer associated with multiphase processes. Avedisian is a Fellow of both the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and ASME and has served on editorial boards for various journals. Outside of academia, he has combined his passion for engineering with personal hobbies, such as building radio-controlled aircraft, and set a U.S. national record for the longest flight of an electric-powered radio-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle indoors. He is the current faculty advisor for the Cornell Unmanned Air Systems Team, which became the World Champion at the AUVSI Student Unmanned Air Systems Competition in 2013.
