Biography

C. Greig Crysler completed professional training in architecture at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, UK. He teaches courses in History, Theory, and Society of Architecture. As the Arcus Chair (2012-2022), he played a pivotal role as program director of the CED’s Arcus Endowment, translating a commitment to equity and social justice into design education frameworks for student-faculty engagement and public discussion. His research focuses on investigating institutions and practices within architectural theory in the context of changing social, economic, and political forces globally. Notable works include the book "Writing Spaces: Discourses of Architecture, Urbanism and the Built Environment" (Routledge, 2003), and the interdisciplinary cross-cultural "Handbook of Architectural Theory" co-edited with Hilde Heynen and Stephen Cairns. His research navigates the intersection of space, power, and identity through case studies in architecture and urban environments. Crysler's recent publications include "Spaces of Fear: Bodies, Walls, Cities" and upcoming titles that further explore architecture's relationship to cultural and economic contexts. He offers insights into the material conditions of urban centers and engages narratives within global urban humanities through his teaching and scholarship.
