Biography

Professor Wathen's research examines health social service sector responses to gender-based violence, interventions to reduce health inequities, and knowledge mobilization in science. Her work focuses particularly on developing person-centred interventions that enhance health equity and take a gendered, trauma- and violence-informed approach to providing services to those experiencing violence and/or marginalization. She is deeply committed to a partnership approach to research and knowledge sharing, leading several federally funded research initiatives and international networks. Wathen has authored 100 publications in journals of health care, public policy, and information science, as well as edited collections. Her recent work includes the implementation of trauma-violence-informed care in health and social services along with qualitative studies on the impact of COVID-19 on services for women. She holds a Canada Research Chair and has been recognized by multiple awards throughout her career, along with leadership roles in various health and academic organizations.
