Dr. C J Bastmeijer

Biography

Kees Bastmeijer is a Professor of Arctic Antarctic Studies and Director of the Arctic Centre at the University of Groningen. His research focuses on international governance within the Polar Regions, particularly examining the role of law in protecting nature in these areas. Bastmeijer's academic background includes a legal focus, integrating aspects of ecology, sociology, and philosophy into his work. He has a keen interest in the governance of protected areas, property rights concerning nature, and the intersection of law with the human-nature relationship. Kees has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed research articles and publications, notably in the American Journal of International Law and Nature. He has edited books including 'Wilderness Protection in Europe: The Role of International, European, and National Law' and has worked on impactful volumes focusing on transboundary environmental assessments. Bastmeijer also serves on the editorial boards of several law journals and has contributed to the scientific committee for Antarctic research. He has acted as an arbitrator for the Permanent Court of Arbitration related to the Protocol on Environmental Protection of the Antarctic Treaty and has advised the Dutch government on aspects of Antarctic governance.
