Biography

C.J. Mundy is a professor in the Centre for Earth Observation Science at the University of Manitoba, specializing in Biological Oceanography. His research focuses on examining the physical and biological processes in pan-Arctic marine ecosystems, with particular emphasis on primary producers in ice-covered environments. Mundy’s key areas of research include algal ecology, primary production, radiative transfer, and nutrient dynamics in Arctic marine ecosystems. He is particularly interested in the ice-pelagic-benthic coupling processes. His work is heavily field-oriented, involving extensive data collection through sea ice camps and research vessels, including serving as Chief Scientist on the RV William Kennedy. Through his research, he has developed new observational techniques to study the sea ice environment, greatly advancing knowledge in the production of under-ice phytoplankton blooms and revealing essential processes related to climate change.
