Dr. Cagri Besirli

Biography

Cagri G. Besirli is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Michigan Medicine, University of Michigan. His research primarily investigates molecular mechanisms underlying photoreceptor cell death and survival under conditions of retinal stress. Dr. Besirli aims to identify specific proteins that regulate intracellular checkpoints crucial for retinal cell death and survival, which may lead to the development of new therapeutic agents for clinical application. His clinical interests encompass gene therapy for inherited retinal diseases, as well as surgical management of conditions such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. With extensive training in vitreoretinal diseases, he brings significant expertise from his fellowships at the Kellogg Eye Center. His contributions to ophthalmology have also been reflected in his published articles and ongoing research initiatives in the field.
