Biography

Caleb Knapp is a Lecturer in the Department of History at Yale University. His research focuses on American literature and culture, gender and sexuality, as well as the histories of slavery and abolition. He is currently completing a book that examines the nineteenth-century debates around racial slavery and how these shaped the development of modern sexual knowledges in the United States. His research has been supported by the American Studies Association, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the Mellon Foundation. He has also authored an essay titled 'Much-Abused Luke,' which discusses same-sex sexual violence in the context of slavery and was published in the journal History Present.
