Biography

Callan Hummel studies why communities organize political power and negotiate with governments. Hummel is the author of "Informal Workers Organize: Contentious Politics, Enforcement, State" published by Oxford University Press in 2021, which examines the impacts of informal workers organizing on the world’s billion informal workers and local to national politics. Currently, Hummel's research agenda focuses on the surprising expansion of trans and nonbinary rights globally. Utilizing statistical, ethnographic, survey, computational, experimental, and formal methods, Hummel addresses questions within comparative political economy, public health, and civil society. Research is conducted with trans-led NGOs and street vendor unions in Miami, Florida, La Paz, Bolivia, and São Paulo, Brazil. Hummel’s work has been published in prestigious journals such as Lancet Global Health, BMJ Global Health, and Comparative Political Studies, and has received support from significant grants including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
