Dr. Calvin Zimmermann

Biography

Calvin Zimmermann is an Assistant Professor in the School of History and Sociology at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also earned his M.A. in Sociology. His academic focus includes sociology, education, and issues related to race and ethnicity. Specifically, his research examines the causes and consequences of racial inequalities in education, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods. He aims to understand how school policies and practices can perpetuate or mitigate racial inequalities, particularly in early childhood education. His current research is centered on alternative educational spaces, such as microschools and homeschooling cooperatives, that serve Black children and youth. He has a keen interest in the intersection of education policy and social justice, seeking to contribute to social change and to address power imbalances in educational settings. Zimmermann's teaching interests reflect his research pursuits, particularly in the areas of race and ethnicity and sociology education.
