Biography

Camilla Lewis is a senior lecturer in Architectural Studies at the University of Manchester and a member of the Manchester Architecture Research Group (MARG). She completed her PhD in social anthropology at the University of Manchester in 2014. Her research focuses on urban change, inequalities, ageing, housing, and community belonging, combining a strong methodological focus with a variety of ethnographic, sensory, and longitudinal approaches. Camilla’s publications provide theoretical analyses of everyday experiences of inequalities in urban environments and practical suggestions to tackle marginalisation of socially excluded groups. Prior to joining the architecture department, she taught at Newcastle University and worked in post-doctoral research roles in Manchester and Brunel. Between 2018 and 2019, she led an ESRC-funded project entitled ‘The experience of ageing in place over time: a longitudinal perspective’. In 2023, she co-authored a book entitled COVID-19, Inequality and Older People: Everyday Life in a Pandemic, published by Policy Press. She also serves as co-deputy director of the Manchester Urban Ageing Research Group and welcomes enquiries from potential PhD students interested in ageing, urban change, everyday life, and community belonging.
