Biography

Camilla Speller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. She has a BA from the University of Calgary, where she double majored in archaeology and biological anthropology, and earned her MA and PhD from Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on ancient DNA analysis of marine and terrestrial species, with a particular emphasis on North American turkey domestication and environmental archaeology. She is the supervisor for the Ancient DNA Proteins (ADαPT) Facility at UBC and has led research efforts examining human-environment interactions through ancient genomic analysis. Her previous positions include a SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary and a Marie Curie postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of York, UK. She has published extensively in her field, contributing significant insights into the ancient biogeography and ecology of various species, as well as the impacts of human activities on biodiversity. Speller has received numerous awards, including the Governor General's gold medal for her PhD dissertation.
