Biography

Camille Avestruz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Michigan. Her research interests span astrophysics, cosmology, and computation. Avestruz utilizes simulations to make robust predictions and interpretations of observations related to large-scale cosmic structures. Her primary focus is on understanding the evolution of clusters of galaxies, which are massive gravitationally collapsed structures consisting of hundreds to thousands of galaxies. Avestruz's work prepares for a decade of observations and produces unprecedented volumes of data. She incorporates big data methods and machine learning to extract gravitational lensing signatures that probe the mass distribution of massive galaxies and galaxy clusters. Passionate about making STEM accessible to historically excluded groups in the sciences, Avestruz has taught software computation workshops to various audiences, including undergraduate Women in Science and Engineering groups. She is also engaged in public outreach, believing in the importance of intellectual exchange beyond the confines of academia. Avestruz's outreach includes teaching labs at local middle and high schools and giving public talks, such as Astronomy Tap, to underserved elderly communities.
