Biography

Dr. Can Kesmir is an Associate Professor of Bioinformatics at Utrecht University. His research focuses on the development of bioinformatics methods to identify antigenic regions within genomes, aimed at advancing our understanding of the immune system's interactions with endogenous and nonself peptides. Key areas of interest include how T-cells scan for peptides presented by MHC class molecules on the cell surface, discerning between foreign and self peptides. Additionally, he studies the evolution of antigen presentation and processing pathways and the co-evolution of host and pathogen using the HIV-1 model system. His work also encompasses genetic associations with infectious diseases and the identification of neo-antigens, which are mutated self antigens that can develop into cancer. The overarching goal of his research is to improve organ transplantation outcomes when a fully matched donor is not available.
