Biography

Candace Clare Sobers is an associate professor in the Department of History at Carleton University, with a cross-appointment in Global International Studies. She holds a BA (Hons) from Queen’s University, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and a PhD from the University of Toronto. Her research interests are centered on international history and modern international relations, particularly focusing on twentieth century decolonization, national liberation movements, and the global reach of revolutionary internationalism, emphasizing African independence movements and U.S. foreign policy. Dr. Sobers' teaching and research interrogate themes of race, geopolitics, and revolution through a multilingual, multi-sited approach. She has taught courses covering U.S. foreign relations and American history from 1607 to the 1960s. Her current book project traces the global efforts to support and obstruct Angolan independence during the 1970s. In addition to her academic work, she has experience in international development, film, and television production.
