Dr. Carl Mikael Suomivuori

Biography

Carl-Mikael Suomivuori is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Yale School of Medicine. His research combines a broad range of computational and experimental methods to reveal atomic-level mechanisms of biology, with the aim of developing safer and more effective medicines. Suomivuori earned his PhD in Physical Chemistry, as well as MSc and BSc degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Helsinki. He conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University, focusing on challenges in cell signaling and drug discovery, particularly regarding G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). His laboratory aims to uncover atomic-level mechanisms of drug action and uses advanced molecular dynamics simulations and machine learning techniques to design ligands with desired binding kinetics. Research interests also include the role of vesicular neurotransmitter transporters (VNTs) in neurophysiology and potential drug targets, as well as elucidating the mechanisms of receptor tyrosine kinases in cancer therapeutics. His work has published 26 papers and amassed over 1,700 citations, reflecting his significant contributions to pharmacology and computational biology.
