Carl Figdor investigates the use of the immune system to fight cancer through fundamental research into the function of immune cells. His research group focuses on dendritic cells, which play a crucial role in detecting foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria at an early stage, thereby alerting the immune system. The group has identified several new molecules that are important for the proper functioning of these cells within the human body. Researchers utilize dendritic cells to develop vaccines for cancer patients by charging them with cancer cell proteins. The goal of his work is to develop preventive vaccines, particularly for hereditary types of cancer. Figdor is the Director of the Centre for Molecular Life Sciences and heads the Department of Tumour Immunology. He was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008 and received the Spinoza Prize in 2006.
