Dr. Carl Franzén

Biography

Carl Johan Franzén is a Professor of Bioreaction Engineering and Head of the Division of Industrial Biotechnology within the Life Sciences Department at Chalmers University. His research focuses on the development of robust bioprocesses for the production of biobased fuels, chemicals, and microbial cultures. He pays particular attention to the interplay between process conditions and microbial physiology. His main application area involves advanced fed-batch methodology for bioethanol production utilizing lignocellulosic raw materials, employing dynamic mathematical models and physiologically based control tools. His methods have been applied to the biobased production of chemicals such as lactic acid using thermophilic bacteria. Franzén collaborates with industry to investigate microbial production processes designed to modulate and produce robust starter cultures, specifically lactic acid bacteria and probiotics like bifidobacteria. His research contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and enhances the utilization of raw materials such as agricultural and forestry residues in the production of important renewable biofuels and chemicals through microorganisms.
