Biography

Carl Michal is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He obtained his Bachelor's degree from UBC in 1992 and his Doctoral degree from Cornell University in 1997. Following his doctoral studies, he completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1997 to 1999. He joined UBC as an Assistant Professor in 1999, became an Associate Professor in 2005, and has held the position of Professor since 2023. His research focuses on Biophysics, particularly on the study of biological materials and ionic conductors using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. His current projects investigate relaxation magnetization transfer in brain tissue, aiming to improve MRI techniques through fundamental physics of nuclear spin interactions. He also collaborates on research related to the mechanical and thermal properties of nano-crystalline cellulose and develops NMR instrumentation techniques.
