Biography

Carl Müller-Crepon's research focuses on the effects of state building on local development and conflict, particularly in Africa. His recent work explores the reciprocal relationship between ethnic geographies and (sub-)national political borders in Africa and Europe during the 19th century. In August 2022, Carl served as a Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford. Previously, he held a PostDoctoral position in the International Conflict Research Group at ETH Zurich and was a visiting scholar at Harvard University’s Institute for Quantitative Social Science. Carl innovates by using computational methods to collect and analyze large, mostly geospatial datasets. His work has been published in various prestigious journals, including International Organization, British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Political Science Research Methods.
