Carl Petersen studied physics as a bachelor's student at the University of Oxford from 1989 to 1992. He then pursued his PhD studies under the supervision of Sir Michael Berridge at the University of Cambridge from 1992 to 1996, where he investigated cellular and molecular mechanisms of calcium signaling. Following his doctoral studies, Petersen held postdoctoral positions at the University of California, San Francisco, and at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany. At UCSF, he focused on synaptic transmission and plasticity in the hippocampus, while at the Max Planck Institute, he began researching the primary somatosensory barrel cortex and cortical circuits involved in sensory processing. In 2003, he joined the Brain Mind Institute of the Faculty of Life Sciences at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he set up the Laboratory of Sensory Processing, aiming to investigate the functional operation of neuronal circuits in awake mice through quantified behavioral studies. He has held various academic positions, including Director of the Brain Mind Institute and Full Professor at EPFL, and has been actively involved in teaching and mentoring PhD students in the field of neuroscience.
