Professor Thompson received his bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his master's and PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard University. He was an IBM postdoctoral fellow at the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT and joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering faculty in 1983.
