Biography

Carl Tong is an Associate Professor of Medical Physiology at Texas A&M University's Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine. He received his MD/PhD in Medical Physiology from Texas A&M University, following a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University and the Air Force Institute of Technology, respectively. His clinical training includes a residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and a Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Tong's research focuses on heart failure, particularly the mechanisms of cardiac contraction and relaxation, which are critical to heart function. He is dedicated to understanding the complex processes involved in cross-bridge attachment and detachment in cardiac muscle, believing that insight into these mechanisms will lead to new treatments for heart failure. His lab aims to utilize human induced pluripotent stem cells to develop 3-D engineered heart tissues for reliable testing of therapeutic interventions. A practicing cardiologist, Dr. Tong is motivated by the experiences of his patients and strives to improve outcomes for those suffering from heart disease.
