Biography

Carla Gomes is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Department of Information Science at Cornell University, where she is also the director of the Institute for Computational Sustainability and co-director of the Cornell University AI Science Institute. She earned her Ph.D. in computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. Gomes' research is centered on artificial intelligence, particularly in large-scale constraint reasoning, optimization, and machine learning. She is deeply immersed in research that aims to foster a sustainable future through computational sustainability. This emerging field seeks to develop computational methods that address significant environmental, economic, and societal challenges in the quest for sustainability. Gomes has led the team as principal investigator for National Science Foundation expeditions in computing. She has (co-)authored 200 publications in prominent venues such as Nature and Science, in addition to various conferences and journals related to artificial intelligence and computer science. Recognized as the “most influential Cornell professor” by the Merrill Presidential Scholars in 2020, Gomes has received numerous accolades, including the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Feigenbaum Prize and the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award for her significant contributions to artificial intelligence and her innovations in constraint reasoning and optimization. She is a senior fellow with Schmidt AI2050 and a fellow of the AAAI, ACM, and AAAS.
