Carla Harmath earned her medical degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, Brazil, in 1996. She completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1997 to 1998 and a transitional year internship at Hospital Saint Raphael/Yale University in 1999. She then finished her diagnostic radiology residency at Loyola University Medical Center in 2003, where she was chief resident from 2002 to 2003 and received the RSNA Resident Research Award in 2002. Following this, she completed a fellowship in body imaging/MRI at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in 2004. From 2004 to 2007, Dr. Harmath served as a staff radiologist at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center and spent the next decade as an assistant professor in the Department of Radiology at Northwestern University. She joined the University of Chicago in August 2017, currently serving as a Professor specializing in Abdominal Imaging. Her research interests focus on oncologic imaging, CT and MRI imaging of the digestive system, and transplant imaging, as well as the enhancement of medical communication and mentorship. Dr. Harmath has received several awards for teaching, including the Marc Ronald Tetalman Memorial Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2018 and the Senior Class Teaching Award in 2019.
