Carla Mazzarelli studied history, modern art, and museology at the University of Rome 3 and the University of Florence. She received scholarships from the Foundation for the Study of Art History 'Roberto Longhi', the Accademia di San Luca-British Academy, and the Accademia dei Lincei, as well as training at the Courtauld Institute in London. She obtained her PhD in History of Conservation of Works of Art and Architecture at the University of Rome 3 in 2005. From 2007 to 2009, she served as a post-doctoral researcher and was appointed as a Professor of History of Art Criticism at the University of Calabria. Currently, she teaches at the Istituto di Studi Italiani (ISI) at the University of Italian Switzerland. Her research focuses on the classical tradition from the 17th to the 19th century, specifically models of transmission and reproducibility of art during the early modern period. She received the 2014 Research Support Grant from the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art at Yale University. In 2018, she gained the Italian qualification of Associate Professor. Some of her recent publications include works on the history of painting in Italy, art copy theories, and issues related to the historiography of art theory, restoration, and conservation.
