Biography

Carla van Gils obtained her degree in Biomedical Health Sciences in 1994 and her PhD in Epidemiology at Nijmegen University in 1998. She began her career with a fellowship from the Dutch Cancer Society, working as a visiting scientist at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, NC, USA, from 1999 to 2000. In 2001, she joined the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care. From 2014 to June 2021, Carla served as the coordinator for the Cancer Research program at the Julius Center and was a management team member of the Epidemiology department and a board member of the UMC Utrecht Cancer Research program. In October 2017, she was appointed as a Professor of Clinical Epidemiology in Cancer. As of June 2021, she combines her professorship with her role as the director of the Dutch Cancer Society. Her research focuses on impactful innovations in cancer prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and care through interdisciplinary collaboration among cancer researchers.
