Biography

Carlos Gonzales, of Pascua Yaqui Mexican descent, serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia. He received his M.D. from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and has contributed significantly in the field of Family and Community Medicine. In addition to his academic roles, he is involved as the Assistant Dean for Medical Student Education and Curricular Affairs and holds the position of Director for the Rural Health Professions Program as well as Director of Commitment to Underserved Peoples. Gonzales is deeply engaged in mentoring medical students at the University of Arizona and has been recognized with awards such as the Legendary Rural Health Professions Program Director Award from the Arizona Rural Health Association. He is also a member of the Standing Committee on Primary Care at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Gonzales plays a critical role in the Global MD program, coordinating clinical clerkships for students with an emphasis on rural Native American sites in Arizona. His efforts extend to creating an Indigenous medical education curriculum in collaboration with tribal communities in Arizona and Australia.
