Biography

Carlos Hernandez Ortego is a PhD candidate within Andrea Puhar's research group at Umeå University, Sweden, where he focuses on the study of extracellular ATP (eATP) as a Danger Associated Molecular Pattern. Carlos has a diverse educational background; he completed his bachelor’s degree in health biology at Alcalá de Henares in Madrid, Spain, followed by a Master’s in Biomolecular Sciences at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, Netherlands, specializing in Molecular Bioinformatics. His research aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which intestinal commensals and pathogens, such as Escherichia coli and Shigella flexneri, regulate the concentration of eATP in the gut. By utilizing a combination of biochemical and genetic cell biology approaches, his work seeks to enhance understanding of gut inflammation and the dynamics of infectious processes. Carlos is actively involved as a group member in ongoing research and has been recognized for his contributions, recently winning a European poster prize in a competitive setting.
