Biography

Carlos Hirschberg made seminal contributions to glycobiology and biochemistry, focusing on glycan synthesis and sugar precursor transport over more than four decades. He received a professional degree in Biochemistry from the University of Chile in 1965 and completed an MS degree in Nutrition Biochemistry at Rutgers University in 1966. He began his doctoral training at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earning a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1970. His postdoctoral training included work at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He began his independent academic career as an Assistant Professor at St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1974. Throughout his career, he served in various academic roles, including as the Founding Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at Boston University. His pioneering research has advanced the understanding of carbohydrate groups in glycoproteins, glycosaminoglycans, and glycolipids. He has been an influential mentor in the field of glycobiology, actively participating in academic conferences and editorial boards.
