Carlos Alberto Ibarra Moreno graduated from medical school in 1998 at Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. He became involved in malignant hyperthermia research as a PhD aspirant in 2002, under the mentorship of the late Prof. Hirosato Kikuchi at Toho University in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Ibarra specialized in skeletal muscle physiology, particularly using skinned fiber models to assess sarcoplasmic reticulum functions, which were used in Japan to diagnose susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. His main research aspiration is to find a non-invasive method to diagnose this condition. He performed mutation screening of the entire open-reading frame of the RYR1 gene in a large cohort of unrelated Japanese families, achieving an estimation of the prevalence of malignant hyperthermia based on the occurrence of compound heterozygosity. After a hiatus from research between 2006 and 2010 for a period of consecrated life with the Society of Jesus, Dr. Ibarra returned to complete his anesthesia residency at Hadassah Hebrew University Hospital in Jerusalem in 2016. Following this, he pursued fellowships in Cardiovascular Anesthesia and Malignant Hyperthermia at Toronto General Hospital, where he remains a staff anesthesiologist and an independent researcher at the Malignant Hyperthermia Investigation Unit. His collaborations have led to significant contributions in understanding intracellular calcium dynamics associated with malignant hyperthermia susceptibility and the metabolic consequences of this condition.
