Biography

Carlos Mafra joined the University of Southampton in June 2016 as a Royal Society University Research Fellow. He completed his PhD studies in São Paulo, Brazil in 2008 and then moved to Potsdam, Germany for three years of postdoctoral work at the Albert Einstein Institute of Gravitational Physics. In October 2011, he began a postdoctoral position at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in Cambridge, working in the string-theory group led by Michael Green, who was then the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. He also held a one-year research position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA, before settling at the University of Southampton, where he teaches undergraduate courses in Differential Geometry and supervises PhD students. His research focuses on string theory and perturbation theory, specifically on computing scattering amplitudes and exploring various mathematical methods to evaluate integrals that arise in calculations related to these topics. Carlos's work aims to advance the state of the art in superstring scattering amplitudes and to enhance the reputation of the University of Southampton on the global stage.
