Carlos Morales-Aguilar received his Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, France. As a landscape archaeologist, his research focuses on landscape analysis and karst topography in the Central Maya Lowlands. He works to unravel the relationship between ancient Maya societies and their environments using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. Currently, he is investigating long-term human/landscape interactions in the western section of the Rivers Region while utilizing LiDAR data and satellite imagery to address issues in Landscape Archaeology, settlement patterns, and ancient land use. Dr. Morales-Aguilar has participated in numerous archaeological excavation projects in Northern Guatemala and serves as the co-director of the Naachtun Archaeological Project and the field director of the Mirador Basin Archaeological Project. Presently, he is the Director of the Rio Azul Regional Archaeological Project, which is a new research program in Peten, Guatemala.
