Biography

Professor Pantano received his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sevilla in Spain. He obtained a Master's in Applied Mathematics from Ecole Centrale Paris in France and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego. He worked as a Senior Postdoctoral Engineer at the Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales in France from 2000 to 2001 before moving to the California Institute of Technology as a senior post-doctoral associate and senior research scientist in 2006. In 2018, he became a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2006. Professor Pantano is currently an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a member of the American Physical Society (APS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He serves on the editorial boards of the AIAA Journal and the Combustion Theory and Modeling Journal. His research focuses on turbulent flows with a special emphasis on combustion, fluid-structure interaction, and numerical methods for accurate simulation of Navier-Stokes equations.
