Dr. Carlos Solarte

Biography

Carlos Solarte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science at the University of Alberta. He is a Pediatric Ophthalmologist and Adult Strabismus Surgeon, working at the University of Alberta and the Stollery Children’s Hospital. He holds the Aman Builders Inc. Global Professorship in Ophthalmology and is passionate about caring for children and adults with strabismus. His career in medical education has been focused on shaping educational practices and enhancing the training of residents in ophthalmology. As a member of the Competence Committee, he oversees resident assessment and supports the coaching of performance to ensure consistent, high-quality educational experiences in clinical settings. Dr. Solarte collaborates closely with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada on initiatives related to Competency-Based Medical Education. His academic interests also extend to global ophthalmology and capacity building, having worked with Orbis International to contribute to surgical education and residency development across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. He represents the University of Alberta in international academic partnerships, focusing on sustainable improvements in resident education and faculty training. Dr. Solarte is dedicated to developing confident, compassionate ophthalmologists to meet the needs of their communities.
