Biography

Carlos Vargas-Silva is a Professor of Migration Studies and a Fellow at Kellogg College at the University of Oxford. He holds a joint appointment at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) and is based in the Oxford Department of International Development. Carlos has served as the Director of COMPAS from October 2019 to September 2023 and was the founding Director of the DPhil in Migration Studies at Oxford from October 2018 to September 2023. His research primarily revolves around the interaction of migration with labor markets, public services, and health outcomes, focusing on the role of policy in affecting these interactions. Carlos's work contributes to the conceptualization of migration decisions and their impacts on host communities and forced migration contexts through economic concepts. He has developed innovative conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches to investigate evidence in these contexts. Additionally, Carlos is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal 'Migration Studies', published by Oxford University Press, and teaches the MSc in Migration Studies at Oxford. He supervises doctoral students whose research interests align with migration, specifically at the intersection of labor markets, development, and public policy, and encourages new DPhil students to explore these critical areas. He actively collaborates with a group of post-doctoral fellows and welcomes early-career researchers looking to consolidate their research topics.
