Biography

Carmela R. Abraham is an Emeritus Professor at Boston University in the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, specializing in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. She obtained her PhD from Harvard University and her BSc from Tel Aviv University. Her research primarily focuses on the molecular mechanisms leading to normal brain aging and the pathological processes that culminate in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Abraham's laboratory utilizes rhesus monkey models to investigate the changes that occur during non-pathological aging. Notably, she discovered that Klotho, a cytoprotective anti-aging protein, shows a significant decrease in expression in the brains of aged monkeys, rats, and mice. She aims to characterize the role of Klotho in both normal aging and disease, exploring its receptors and signaling pathways to harness its protective effects. Her investigations also delve into the biology of amyloid precursor protein (APP) as it relates to Alzheimer’s, with an emphasis on preventing neurodegeneration caused by increased levels of amyloid beta peptide (Abeta). Dr. Abraham has received recognition for her contributions to neuroscience and has mentored numerous graduate students at Boston University.
