Originally from Mexico, Carmen Alatorre is a Latina artist with a MFA degree in Theatre Design from the University of British Columbia, earned in 2010. She also holds a BA degree in Art History from Centro de Cultura Casa Lamm in Mexico City, completed in 2006. With 90 design credits to her name, Carmen's work has been featured by a variety of prominent companies including Vancouver Opera, Caravan Farm Theatre, Gateway Theatre, and the Arts Club Theatre Company, among others. She has also contributed to the Bard Beach Shakespeare Festival, Globe Theatre Regina, and Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. In addition to her design work, Carmen has taught at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia as a sessional instructor, where she has been actively involved in mentoring emerging artists. She has received 11 outstanding design nominations and has been honored with four Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, as well as the Applause Musical Ovation Award. Furthermore, she co-curated the Canadian National Exhibit for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Space in 2023.
